New dogs for this group needed - The group of dogs and handlers that have been attending for a while are now so happy with each other we can have them off lead walking together so we need some new dogs to come into the group to be new doggy friends for them.
Some dogs just aren't very good around other dogs for various reasons. Walking and exercising these dogs can be very difficult and frustrating. Most owners understandably get embarrased and upset when their dog lunges and barks at others dogs. The problem usually gets worse the more the dog practices this behaviour so it isn't going to get better unless you make an effort to do something about it!
The first step is a 1:1 consultation so I can understand better why your dog is unhappy around others. Once this is understood and explained then owners usually see the problem in a new light and can work towards making things better. Secondly and very importantly you need to be shown how to manage your dog's inappropriate behaviour while you begin the task of rehabilitating your dog. If applicable this can be achieved through practice in a safe environment with other owners who also have an unsociable hound!!!
This is where the classes for unsociable dogs comes in as you will be among other owners who have similiar problems with their dogs so they fully understand any embarrasement you may feel and they won't care if your dog barks (although we will be working really hard on keeping our dogs relaxed)! The class will take place outside in a park where there is ample space so we can keep a safe distance between the dogs in class as we practice the skills we need.
Then we can begin the slow process of teaching our dogs that the presence of other dogs can be tolerated and we can show them how we want them to behave and respond. The key is to work slowly , building your confidence and slowly changing your dog's perception of other dogs. This takes time, patience and lots of practice and repetition. We will be using postive reinforcement techniques, treats and games to change our dog's perception of other dogs.
These classes will be taking place on Sunday afternoon in Grove at 2:30pm. Being outside may not be as comfortable for owners as it is for the dogs. However our dogs will feel less stressed outside with large open spaces rather than in much more close proximity in an enclosed hall environment. So you will need to dress appropriately for the weather and park environment - don't forget your pooh bags!!
The class has been running for several months now and we have had some really amazing results. Dogs that couldn't tolerate being within 50 yards of other dogs are now happily walking together a few feet away. Some of these dogs and owners have worked really hard with their dogs when the dogs have become comfortable with each other we have been able to have them off lead walking together.
Occasionally some of these dogs have been misdiagnosed by anxious owners as unsociable and not allowed near other dogs which is quite understandable. In reality all the dog wanted to do was to say hello and play but being unable to do so they have become so frustrated that they create a fuss and lose all self control when they see other dogs. Some of these dogs are now happily allowed to play with others and the problem has ceased creating happy owners and happy dogs!!!!
There are no quick fixes for unsociable dogs you can't teach them to 'like' other dogs like you may teach a trick or a command. You have to gradually and patiently change your dog's perception of other dogs! Realistically your dog may never ever be able to run in the park again off lead playing nicely with other dogs but all can be helped to some degree. Thankfully teaching the human handlers how to manage their dog safely outside when walking is easier to do and the simple management techniques that I teach can be learned quickly and simply.
Doesn't your dog deserve some help?
The class can only accomodate a few dogs and not every dog will be suitable to attend but this will be discussed when you conatct me. Please email or call for more details sheilamcd@fastmail.fm 01235 227244
I am also looking for volunteer 'greeters' who are willing to help rehaibilitate dogs who are fearful of people. This will usually entail visiting the dog at home and under careful supervision will greet the dog and slowly befriend the dog so it can begin to see that humans can be fun not scary. You will obviously need to be confident around dogs and not phased if barked at by an unsure frightened dog!
